Students studying Chinese at Carthage have many opportunities to enrich their education.
Student Organizations
Carthage Chinese students can get involved in several student organizations dedicated to putting what’s learned in the classroom into practice. Join the Chinese Club, the International Friendship Society, and more!
The Chinese Program and Chinese Club host several Chinese festivals and celebrations each year for the campus community, including the Mid-Autumn Festival and the annual Chinese New Year Celebration.
The Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as Moon Festival or Mooncake Festival, is a traditional festival celebrated in Chinese culture for the end of the autumn harvest. Students, faculty, and community members learn about the festival tradition and Chinese culture while enjoying mooncakes, drinking Chinese tea, and making paper lanterns.
Chinese New Year is celebrated in January, and features a variety of activities, including paper cutting, lantern making, and Chinese dumpling cooking and eating.
Students can learn more about upcoming Chinese celebrations on The Bridge, the campus e-newsletter.
J-Term
January Term is a month-long period of study in January in which all academic departments at Carthage offer innovative courses on campus and study tours in other countries. Recent J-Term offerings from the Modern Languages Department include:
Chinese and Japanese Cultures Through Films: An on-campus study of cinema and culture
Rooted in Place: History, Biodiversity, and Environment in Southeast Asia (study tour)
All modern language majors must study abroad for at least one term. Carthage offers courses before traveling abroad that prepare students both linguistically and culturally for this experience. Carthage is affiliated with several reputable institutions to provide our students with academically rigorous, high-quality international programs in a variety of locations around the globe.
The Chicago Chinatown field trip has been an annual event of the Chinese Program and Chinese Club for years. It’s one of the most immersive ways for students to experience Chinese culture in the area. Students can find out more about upcoming field trips to Chinatown and more on The Bridge, the campus e-newsletter.
Chinese Lunch Table
During the weekly Chinese Lunch Table, students chat in Chinese with each other, professors, Target Language Experts, and international students from China.
Target Language Experts
At Carthage, introductory language courses are taught by native speakers. The College hires graduate students from around the world to come to Carthage to share their language and culture. These Target Language Experts bring an energy and authenticity to modern language courses, giving students new to a language a vibrant and exciting introduction.
